A groundbreaking Memorandum of Understanding between Staffordshire Learning and Skills Council (LSC) and Jobcentre Plus for Staffordshire is set to create closer links between learning and sustainable employment for local people. The agreement, which directly supports the aims of the National Skills Strategy, ‘21st Century’ Skills, will bring together the complementary responsibilities of the two organisations under a detailed action plan aimed at promoting and assisting joint working. Gill Howland, Acting Executive Director for Staffordshire LSC, pointed out the benefits of closer collaboration. "Working with our partners is crucial when transforming the skills base of the area and our partnership with Jobcentre Plus will be key to achieving this aim." She continued: "We need to get the message across that learning increases your chances of moving into rewarding employment that offers opportunities and good pay." At the heart of the Memorandum of Understanding will be the development of an action plan, which will focus on exchanging data and labour market intelligence, pooling resources for joint marketing activities and streamlining delivery processes. Julie Carruthers, Head of Jobcentre Plus for Staffordshire, reinforced the commitment: "It is all about equipping people with the skills they need to re-enter employment or to find new jobs as industries change and market patterns move. Increased working relationships will allow us to maximise the opportunities of Essential Skills, Modern Apprenticeships, and lifelong learning" primarily because we will able to demonstrate to people that training does lead to better opportunities." The Memorandum of Understanding will be reviewed on a regular basis to ensure that new developments are incorporated as and when they break.
