Manchester Airport is home to its very own Jobcentre Plus. Each year they help over 2,000 people find jobsManchester Airport is one of the region’s major employers and employs over 20,000 people. Employees’ travel from all over the North West and much further a field to fulfill their ambitions of working there. "Spring is one of the best times of year to find a job at the airport," says Denise Hennesey, Manager at the airport’s Jobcentre Plus office. Danielle Salkeld, 22, got a job at the airport when she moved back to Manchester from Dublin. "I’d always wanted to work in an airport, so I visited Jobcentre Plus to see what was available,” she says. “The staff were really helpful and found a variety of jobs I was interested in. I applied to become a passenger service agent at the check-in desk, I got the job and I love it." Jobcentre Plus is the first to find out about any new vacancies that come up at the airport. Staff work very closely with airport employers to find out exactly what sort of people they are looking for. Many of the airport’s vacancies are seasonal and as the airport continues to expand, more and more opportunities will be available year round. "We’ve got lots of seasonal vacancies at the moment – including retail, catering, customer service, baggage handlers, ramp operatives or HGV drivers," says Denise. "Sometimes we get unusual vacancies. We’ve even advertised for a bird-scarer to frighten all the birds off the runway! And as far as I know the guy who got the job is still going strong." Jobcentre Plus offices can also be found at Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and Birmingham airports.
