The Taking It On road-show visited on 9 June, the Cornhill in Ipswich, where older visitors were able to learn about job and learning opportunities. Taking It On is a partnership between the BBC, Jobcentre Plus and other organisations including Age Concern and Help the Aged and today’s event featured over 50 stands. Terri Pearson, vacancy services manager for Ipswich Jobcentre Plus said: “The 50+ age group is set to grow by 30% over the next 20 years so the aim of the road-show is to raise awareness of the issues surrounding living, learning and working longer in the East of England.” “Today Jobcentre Plus and other organisations were able to give older people information on employment, training, volunteering and learning opportunities for those in work and those looking for work, as well as direct people towards sources of advice, help and support.“ Inbiz, a Jobcentre Plus training provider were also represented at the road-show. Mel Harvey, programme co-ordinator said: “ 50 + Motivation is a modular programme, free of charge, designed to give people who have not been working for up to a year an opportunity to analyse their skills and develop their self confidence “. Visitors to the road-show were also able to use a computer software programme which suggested how they would look when they grew older. They also had the opportunity to get to grips with the basics of Information Technology aboard Age Concern’s computer bus. There was also a consultant on hand from Colour Me Beautiful who gave helpful hints and tips on how to improve your professional image.
