Jobs boost for Wolverhampton man
*

A Wolverhampton man says his confidence is sky-high after getting his first job following eight years of claiming benefits.

Richard Mckenzie (28) from Rindleford Avenue, Wolverhampton, who has a learning disability, had been unemployed since leaving education more than eight years ago. With a passionate interest in decorating cakes, Richard had always been keen to work in catering.

When the Bradmore Arms pub in Trysull Road, Wolverhampton advertised for staff, the disability employment adviser at Jobcentre Plus, Tina Bannon, encouraged Richard to apply.  Richard was keen but also apprehensive, so Tina put him in touch with the Pathways to Work programme at Seetec which provides help for people on incapacity benefit.  They were able to support Richard on completing the application form and preparing for his job interview.  Richard was successful in getting a job as a kitchen porter.

Moving off benefits was a huge step for Richard, but Tina was able to reassure him by explaining how much better off he would be in work. And, as well as the financial benefits, Richard is enjoying the social side of having a job.

Richard said: “Since I started at the Bradmore Arms, my confidence has gone up in leaps and bounds. I’m working hard and getting on well with everyone.

“I’d like to thank Tina for helping me find a job that I really wanted and enjoy doing. My life has changed so much – if I can do it, anyone can!”

Chris Peck, manager of the Bradmore Arms, said: “We value Richard as a conscientious and hard worker who has fitted really well into the team.”

Tina said: “Richard has gained confidence and is an inspiration to others in moving off benefits and going to work. He is already going from strength to strength in his new job, and we wish him every success for the future.”
