How we can help when you start work

There are a number of ways Jobcentre Plus can help you when you start work.

£40 a week on top of your salary when you start work, plus help to get the job you want.

If you're bringing up children on your own and you start work, from 7 April 2008 we could give you £40 a week (£60 a week in London) on top of your salary, tax free for up to a year. It is called an In Work Credit Payment. You're entitled to this as long as:

  • You work for over 16 hours a week
  • The job you take lasts for over 5 weeks
  • You've been claiming benefits for at least 12 months

More information about In Work Credit.

Working Tax Credit

If you start work and are on a low income, you may be able to get money from tax credits.

Child Tax Credit

If you look after any children under the age of 16 you may be able to claim Child Tax Credit to help with the cost of looking after them.

Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit

If you were getting Income Support for at least 26 weeks, you may be able to get an additional 4 weeks payment of Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit. For more information ask your personal adviser.

Adviser support when you're in work

Your personal adviser will stay with you for up to 6 months after you find a job, to support you while you settle in to your new job.
