Moving into work

If you find a job and you're earning a low income, you might be able to get Working Tax Credit. You might also be able to get Child Tax Credit if you have children. To find out about tax credits, visit www.hmrc.gov.uk or call 0845 300 3900.

You may also be entitled to other financial help when you start work.

Job Grant - a tax-free, one-off payment of £250 for lone parents and couples with children, or £100 for single customers and couples without children.

In Work Credit - a tax-free payment up to 52 weeks of £40 a week (£60 a week in London) for lone parents.

Mortgage Interest Run-on, Council Tax Extended Payment and Housing Benefit Extended Payment - help for people who would lose benefits when they start work.

If you are in work, you may still qualify for help with your rent or Council Tax through Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit. For more information contact your local authority.

What happens to my benefits when I find a job?

You might have to give up some of your benefits if you find a job, but you could also get other kinds of support - such as Working Tax Credit.

If your job doesn't work out and you have to claim benefits again within 12 weeks, you might be able to put in a claim to get the same benefits you were getting before you started work. We can help you make sure you don't lose out financially and tell you how your benefits might be affected.
