BT Case Study - Glenys Hayers

Glenys is 61 years old and has been with BT for 18 years, she is a team manager for events in BT business.

On reaching 60, Glenys was very apprehensive about retirement. She was greatly valued by her manager and was asked to stay on at BT past 60 which Glenys was very keen to do. Glenys feels that she will know when she wants to retire, but right now she enjoys her job immensely, she likes the challenges it throws her as well as the social side of working in a team. When Glenys does think about retiring, she wants to take advantage of BT's flexible retirement options or go part time.

Glenys does not believe that being over 60 makes people unable to perform at work or incapable of learning new things, she feels that older people are very valuable in the workplace due to their great experience and expertise.

Glenys says that she feels in control of her future at BT and was glad she was given the choice to stay on past 60 and decide any time that she wants to take a step back. She thinks that there can be pressure on older people to automatically retire when they reach 60, but she has never felt this at BT.
