Minister seeks Derby's views on Welfare Reform
*

People in Derby are being encouraged to give their views on the Government’s radical plans for welfare reform.

James Plaskitt, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Work & Pensions, was in Derby today (16 September) to see first hand how local projects play their part in getting more people back to work.

Speaking at Osmaston & Allenton Childrens Centre where Jobcentre Plus work with Lone Parents to help them back into employment, James Plaskitt said:

"We’re serious about helping people off benefits and into jobs where they will have the chance to make the most of their talents.

"We know that people in work are better off not only financially but in their health, wellbeing and self-esteem. In Derby today, I have seen some really good initiatives which can provide the environment needed for people to realise their potential. I would like to see more of them and I would encourage anyone with an interest to share their ideas with us."

While in the city, James Plaskitt also met with local employers including Ramada Hotels and Livegood Music who have committed to taking on new employees currently on benefits by signing a Local Employment Partnership with Jobcentre Plus. The Minister then went on to visit the Derbyshire JobMAET’s Multi Agency Employment Team who work to help the most disadvantaged in the labour market improve their skills needed to find sustainable work.

The Department for Work and Pensions is seeking views about the reforms proposed in the consultation, you can view details of the consultation on the DWP website.

You can respond to using the form for the Welfare Reform green paper consultation.
