Sam Baugh, from Kingston Park, landed the position of management assistant at the Jesmond Hotel after the company took advantage of the a 'Golden Hello' recruitment and training package offered by Jobcentre Plus. Through the 'Golden Hello' scheme, which was introduced in April, the Jesmond Hotel will get up to £2,500 for taking on Sam, who had previously been unemployed for seven months. Sam was offered the job at the 18-room hotel on Osborne Road after successfully completing a two-week work trial - another initiative offered by Jobcentre Plus which lets jobseekers try out in vacancies for up to six weeks whilst continuing to get their benefit payments.
Pamela Cetoloni, manager of the Jesmond Hotel said: "I've used Jobcentre Plus in the past, but this time I was told I could take someone on a work trial for two weeks. It's a brilliant idea as it gave me the chance to see someone actually doing the job day in day out. It also gives the candidate the chance to know this job is right for them. "I welcome the extra help with training costs as there is so much more to learn about in the hotel trade these days. It will certainly help me provide Sam with all the training she needs." Sam (28) was delighted to be given the chance to show what she could do. She said: "I've applied for a lot of jobs in the last few months and although I had a couple of interviews, I wasn't able to find work. But doing the work trial gave me the chance to get into a routine and proved to me - and to Pamela - that I could fit in well here. "The 'Golden Hello' scheme is part of a package of measures designed to give more support to people who've been claiming Jobseeker's Allowance for some time. Employers who take on jobseekers who have been unemployed for six months or more can receive a payment made up of a £1000 recruitment subsidy plus access to up to £1500 worth of in-work training. More information on the scheme can be found on the 'Employers' section.
