Winners announced for London Local Employment Partnership Awards
Employers in London were celebrating on Thursday 26 March 2009 at the Local Employment Partnership (LEP) awards ceremony held at Chelsea Football Club. The awards recognised the outstanding contributions made by employers, employees and partners involved in LEPs with Jobcentre Plus - the Government's partnership approach to help disadvantaged jobseekers back into work. The ceremony was hosted by Tim Campbell, the winner of the 2005 series of the Apprentice and founder of the Bright Ideas Trust. Travelodge scooped the Partnership Works Award for providing opportunities for disadvantaged local people which includes a tailored pre-employment training scheme called Go Forward, basic and soft skills development and pre-vocational customer service training. Michelle Luxford, Interim Director of Human Resources said: "It's the partnership itself that's been most successful. We work together with Jobcentre Plus to make it happen and that means it's a win-win situation. All the hard work has paid off and we're committed to using the LEP in the future." An individual award went to Meurika Stewart for Getting Back to Work. Coming from a tough childhood, Meurika had no qualifications or work experience and was leading a life of drugs and crime. Through a prison rehabilitation project, she took the opportunity given by a LEP between London-based BeOnsite, and Jobcentre Plus to learn plastering skills as a Dry Lining Trainee. Meurika says: "I love my job. It's absolutely wonderful. The guys I work with are great too. Having this opportunity has changed my life dramatically, I can't want for more! It's made me more confident and sure of myself. BeOnsite is so supportive, not just with the work but mentally as well. I just know I'm not going to go back to my old life."
