New Deal for Disabled People

What is New Deal for Disabled People?

New Deal for Disabled People is part of the Government's Welfare to Work agenda. It is a voluntary initiative that operates in some areas of the UK. It aims to support people on disability or health related benefits to move into and retain paid work.

How can New Deal for Disabled People help my company?

Many employers have long recognised that people with a disability or health condition have a wide range of talents to bring to business. The Job Brokers contracted to deliver New Deal for Disabled People are made up of private, voluntary and public sector organisations or combinations of these in partnership. Job Brokers can help your company to fill vacancies by matching suitable applicants and developing the skills people with a disability or health conditions have to meet the needs of employers.

Job Brokers can:

  • Match your skill requirements with suitable people looking for work
  • Offer advice and information on employing people with health conditions or disabilities
  • Support you and your new employee for the first six months to ensure a smooth start
  • Work in partnership with you in the longer term

What financial help is available if changes need to be made to my business premises?

Employing a person with a disability or health condition may mean that particular equipment or changes to your premises are necessary. However, adjustments are not always expensive, according to recent independent research, most cost less than £50. Adjustments could include, inexpensive minor changes such as moving desks, arranging more flexible hours of work; or changing screen colours or font size. Job Brokers can offer advice about the practical help that is available. Equipment and adaptation of premises etc are available through programmes such as the Governments Access to Work programme.
