Widowed Parent's Allowance

Last updated April 2006

This benefit is dealt with by Jobcentre Plus.

What is it?

A new system of bereavement benefits for men and women was introduced in April 2001. The new system will not affect women who were already getting benefits under the previous scheme as long as they continue to qualify under the rules.

A Widowed Parent's Allowance is:

  • based on your late husband, wife's or civil partners NI contributions
  • for widows, widowers or surviving civil partners bringing up children
  • a regular payment.

Can I get it?

Are you:

  • bringing up at least one child, or expecting your late husband's baby, or expecting a baby as a result of artificial insemination or in-vitro fertilization?
  • the widow or widower of a spouse or the surviving civil partner of someone who has paid NI contributions?

If YES to both, claim Widowed Parent's Allowance.

What else should I know?

How much will I get?

The allowance is £84.25.

For those people widowed prior to 6 April 2003 a Child Dependency Increase is paid with the allowance. These rates are as follows;

If you have dependant children, you may get:

for the oldest child who qualifies for Child Benefit

£9.25

for each other child who qualifies

£11.35

All claims made on or after 6 April 2003 will receive Child Tax Credit. Contact HMRC www.hmrc.gov.uk/taxcredits  to inform them of your change of circumstances.

How do I claim?

Claim straight away. If you delay you may lose benefit.

Contact your social security office for a claim form. Find your local office on this site or look in the phone book under Benefits Agency, Jobcentre Plus or social security.
