Child Benefit someone gets for you

Last updated December 2002

This benefit is dealt with by Jobcentre Plus.

What is it?

  • Paid to people bringing up a child or children

Can someone get it for me?

Are you:

  • aged under 16 and under 19?
  • studying full-time up to GCSE A level, Advanced Vocational Certificate of Education (AVCE) or equivalent?

If YES to both, Child Benefit may continue to be paid for you.

What else should I know?

If you have recently come from abroad or returned from abroad, there are some extra rules.

Your studies must be supervised for more than 12 hours a week at a school or college.

If the person getting Child Benefit for you gets extra money for you on other benefits, this may continue.

Child Benefit may also continue for a limited time if you have registered at your Careers Office to find training or work and have not yet been placed.

To see if Child Benefit can continue, the person who gets it for you should contact the Child Benefit Centre, giving their Child Benefit reference number.

You can get general information about Child Benefit on www.inlandrevenue.gov.uk.
